Pollution Harmful to Human Health

In August 2006, the Probo Koala disposed of more than 500 tonnes of toxic waste in the Ivorian port of Abidjan. This toxic waste was found by an inquiry to have resulted in the deaths of 17 Ivorians and injuries to over 30,000 Ivorians.

Pollution harms the environment on which healthy lives depend. This environmental crime would punish individuals for some of the most serious violations of the rights health, food, and water, which are guaranteed in articles 11 and 12 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
